Diana Taurasi

Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi tested positive for a banned substance while playing in Turkey and has been suspended.

    According to a press release from the Federation of Turkish basketball, Taurasi was positive in a urine sample for routine modafinil. The substance is used to help sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and sleep apnea.

    Taurasi has been temporarily suspended until the B sample was tested.

    Many women play in top European leagues in the WNBA offseason. Taurasi played in Turkey for the first time after spending the last four years in Russia.

    The former star of the University of Connecticut, has signed a contract extension for several years with Phoenix in August. She led the WNBA in scoring four times in the last three seasons and was the league MVP in 2009.

    Also in the top WNBA rookie in 2004, Taurasi, Phoenix helped to league titles in 2007 and 2009. Was exposed to mercury for both games during the 2009 season after an arrest on charges of impaired driving.

    In addition to her WNBA Taurasi was also an NCAA champion three times with the University of Connecticut and helped the USA to a pair of Olympic gold medals.
