Happy Holidays

Nebraska preparing for the holiday with family and friends celebrating, I recognize a special group of families in our country.
More than 1,000 members of the National Guard in Nebraska are among those who serve our country abroad for Christmas. Nebraska I ask you keep all those who serve in the armed forces in your thoughts on this season, including the families of the soldiers with the 192nd to ensure military police detachment to maintain security in Iraq, the 67th Brigadier Authority battlefield in Iraq and Support Battalion Charlie Company 2-135. General Aviation will soon air evacuation and medical care for the troops in Iraq.
Nebraska units are also in Afghanistan, including the 1-134. Cavalry, the 623rd Engineering Company and the 402nd Military Police Battalion has completed the training mission in the United States prior to deployment to Afghanistan.
Other Guard units are in the new year, making it one of the busiest times of our Guard personnel since the war began. Their professionalism and dedication in the service of our state and nation really admirable. Nebraska hopefully keep our Guard and their families in mind as you spend time with his family.
It is a time of year when many are looking forward to their favorite family traditions and the opportunity to spend time with friends.
In recent years, our family tradition have developed includes the opportunity for some of the state employees make Nebraska the best place to live help visit. In the past two years, Sally and I have also decorated an open house at the Governor's Mansion for Christmas this year organized by the writings of Willa Cather's Nebraska author.
An event that we hope every year is the lighting of the Christmas Tree State Capitol Rotunda. Each year on Sunday afternoon in early December, we met at the State Capitol Rotunda to hear songs performed by local students. Sally and I encourage young children in the audience to help us light the tree that is about 30 feet tall architecture of the rotunda.
It is a tradition for more than 60 years and a tradition that began during the Second World War when the military and their families in the former Lincoln Air Force came Base stationed to greet and reflects host families hosting services Sunday at the State Capitol steps.
Nebraska people are very generous and caring. Their willingness to give back and help others, is strong in our state. There are countless examples of kindness that take in schools, offices and homes of the country for this time of year. For those who took the time to brighten the holiday season to another person in our state, I thank you for your generosity.
Merry Christmas, happy holidays and best wishes for a wonderful 2011.
