Fourth Of July


Looking for something fun to do during the holiday weekend without having to take a long drive? The following is a list of July Fourth weekend events in Central Massachusetts:
Auburn
Saturday: A family road race-2-mile run will be at 9 a.m. at Lemansky Park on Oxford Street. Preregistration will be at 8:30 a.m. at Lower Lemansky Park. The family bike race will be at 10 a.m. with a parade at 11 a.m., invocation, the national anthem and contests, including decorated child bike, tricycle, big wheel and doll carriage and dress up as a clown, at noon. A decorated pet contest will be at 12:15 p.m., along with carnival games, food and crafts vendors. The roaming railroad will open at 4 p.m. and singer Tom Revane will perform at 4 p.m. Field games and pony rides will be at 4:30 p.m. and country-rock singer Glenn Stewart will perform at 7:30 p.m. A fireworks display will be at 9:30 p.m. The rain date for fireworks only is Sunday.

Bolton
Monday: A parade will step off from the Sawyer School on Mechanic Street at 11:30 a.m., proceed down Main Street (Route 117) and end at noon at Memorial Field, off Wattaquadock Hill Road. A Family Festival will be held from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Field, including three-legged sack races, adult tricycle racing, a moon bounce, dunk tank, air brush tattooing and a pie-eating contest. Food will be available from the Bolton Lions Club. Music will be provided by Hooper & Beckwith. For more information, visit www.boltoncelebrates.org.

Clinton
July 9: The annual fireworks display will be held at dusk, about 9:20 p.m., at the Veterans Memorial Athletic Fields, off Route 110 across from the Clinton High and Middle schools. The rain date in July 10. Activities will start at 6 p.m., with food and other vendors on hand. The event is sponsored by the Clinton Firefighters, and donations are needed to continue it next year. Checks for donations should be made out to “Clinton Firefighters” and sent to the Clinton Fire Department, 555 Main St., Clinton, MA 01510. Capt. Mike Lutes said the event, paid for solely with donations, costs about $14,000.
East Brookfield
July 8: The East Brookfield Fire Association's annual Independence Day Celebration will begin at 6 p.m. with a Battle of the Bands hosted by the East Brookfield Friends for the Community. An amusement midway will be available.

July 9: The celebration will continue beginning at noon with the fire apparatus parade, followed throughout the afternoon with events and activities at Connie Mack Field coordinated by the East Brookfield Friends for the Community. The day will be capped off with the annual fireworks display at 9:30 p.m., hosted by the East Brookfield Fire Association. Beginning at 6 p.m., an admission fee of $2 will be charged for everyone 5 and older. The fee goes toward the cost of the fireworks. Any bands wishing to take part in the Battle of the Bands should contact friendsforthecommunity@yahoo.com. Any groups wishing to participate in the parade or anyone wishing to donate to the fireworks may contact the East Brookfield Fire Department from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, (508) 867-3124, and leave a message for Joshua McCrillis.

Fitchburg
Saturday: Events include a downtown block party on Main Street and at the Riverfront Park from 1 to 9 p.m. At Riverfront Park, the doll carriage parade is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. and the Amazing Duck Race from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A softball tournament will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Amiott Field on River Street.

Sunday: A KidzParty Palooza at Crocker Field will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there will be live entertainment at the Upper Common from 6 p.m. until after dark, followed by fireworks at 10 p.m. from Rollstone Hill.

Monday: The 52nd annual Fourth of July Parade will be from 10 a.m. to noon. The parade will proceed from John Fitch Highway down Main Street to the reviewing stand in front of City Hall.

Grafton
Sunday: The Lions Club will sponsor a concert at 7 p.m. on the Common.

Monday: The town's first-ever Regatta Race will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at Silver Lake Beach. Those who wish to participate are asked to bring a homemade recyclable float to the event, which is being sponsored by the Recreation Department. A one-day pass to Silver Lake Beach costs $5 and a yearly pass costs $50 for town residents and $75 for nonresidents.

Harvard
Tomorrow: The Fruitlands Museum, 110 Prospect Hill Road, will be home to an Independence Day celebration with bands, food, and fireworks. Music is slated to start at 5 p.m. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks will be available for purchase; local Girl Scouts will be on hand selling desserts. Visitors are also allowed to bring picnics to the event. Fruitlands is donating the use of its grounds for the Fourth of July festivities. A parking fee of $10 will be collected and all proceeds will support the fireworks fund. Beverages are not permitted to be brought onto the grounds, but can be purchased at the concession stand. Monday: The 5-mile Great Harvard 4th of July Race will begin at the Bromfield School at 8:15 a.m. A 1-mile fun run for kids will be at 9:30 a.m. The Fourth of July Parade will begin at 11 a.m. in the town center and will be followed by field events at the Bromfield School at noon.

Milford
Sunday: The town's fireworks display is scheduled for 10 p.m. at Plains Park on Cedar Street. The rain date is Tuesday. The park will be open for the fireworks display in the early evening. The event is free.

Millbury
Tomorrow-Monday: The Millbury Lions Club's holiday carnival will be held tomorrow through Monday at Windle Field on Canal Street. The fair will open at 6 p.m. each day. Fireworks are scheduled for about 9:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Windle Field. The fireworks will be held Tuesday if it rains Monday.

Northboro
Tomorrow: The Recreation Department will host a barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Senior Center, 119 Bearfoot Road. There will be food, music and games and a moon bounce for children. Tickets purchased in advance are $5 for seniors, $10 for general admission and $25 per family. Tickets purchased the day of the event are $7 for seniors, $12 for general admission and $35 per family. Northbridge
Tomorrow: Fireworks will be held at 9:20 p.m. at the middle school on Linwood Avenue. Gates at the middle school will open at 6 p.m. and food will be available. There will also be music.

Putnam
Saturday: Music by John Press Mess will be played from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m., followed by fireworks, all at Rotary Park on Kennedy Drive. Rain date is July 9.

Rutland
Tomorrow: Red School graduates' reunion will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at Jordan Farm.

Saturday: Events include the Ann Marie Gordon Junior Olympics for ages 5-12 at 9:30 a.m. and a volleyball tournament at 11 a.m., both at Memorial Field; Doc Thayer Road Race at 5 p.m. and lip-sync for all ages at 6:30 p.m., both on the Common; and free dance lessons from the Finnish Society at 7 p.m. and Finnish Society Red White and Blue Dance at 8 p.m., $5 admission, both at Sovittaja Park.

Sunday: At 1 p.m., there will be a bike and doll carriage parade on Sunny Common (in front of churches); at 2 p.m., a lemonade social and Historical Society open house at Wood House, 232 Main St.; at 3 p.m., soccer pass and dribble at Memorial Field; and at 4:30 p.m. a chicken barbecue and at 5 p.m. a strawberry festival, both behind the fire station. A band concert will be performed at 7 p.m. on the Common. The fireworks display will begin at 9:20 p.m. at Memorial Field.

Monday: A pancake breakfast will be held at 7 a.m. at Rutland Community Center, Glenwood Road. The 63rd annual parade will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Central Tree Middle School.

Shrewsbury
Monday: The town's Fourth of July activities, sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Department, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at Dean Park, 803 Main St. There will be food booths, music by DJ Jimmie Johnson, inflatable amusements (need a ticket or wristband — sold the day of the event), face painting, Sunny the Clown and games. A decorated bike and doll carriage parade will be held at 12:30 p.m. For more information, call (508) 841-8503.

Spencer
Saturday: Family Fun Day & Fireworks will begin at noon at the Spencer Fairgrounds. Admission and parking are free. The firetruck parade will begin at noon from David Prouty High School and end at the Fairgrounds. After the parade, there will be a firemen's muster, dunk tank, live bands and a hypnotist. There also will be food vendors, carnival rides and games, face painting, airbrush and glitter tattoos, rock 'n' roll memorabilia, and kids light-up toys. Fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. No coolers are permitted on the grounds. The rain date is July 16.

Southbridge
Monday: The Leonide Lemire Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6055 will hold its 62nd road race at 9 a.m. The 4.9-mile race will begin at post headquarters, 219 Everett St. Applications are available at the post. Preregistration is $6 and the post-entry fee is $8. It is the second-oldest race in the country, organizers say. There will be water stations along the route. The club will provide refreshments after the race.

Sturbridge
Sunday: Old Sturbridge Village has canceled its fireworks display because of the recent flooding of its fireworks launch site. Tickets will be refunded. For more information, visit www.osv.org. Daytime events will be held. OSV plans to reschedule the fireworks display.

Monday: During OSV's Independence Day celebration, which will begin at 9:30 a.m., visitors will be able to sign a giant reproduction of the Declaration of Independence and hear the document read. The activities include fife and drum music, a citizen's parade, and militia marching. Visitors also are invited to play games of 19th-century “base ball.”

Templeton
Monday: First Church of Templeton will hold a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at noon in the church sanctuary. About two-dozen volunteers will participate in the reading, which is open to the public. After the reading, the Narragansett Historical Society will serve ice cream at its building on the other side of the Common.

Webster
Sunday: Fireworks will be displayed at 9:30 p.m. at Memorial Beach. Gates open at noon. There will be food vendors and entertainment. No dogs or alcohol are permitted. Admission is $10 for vehicles; $2 for walk-ins. Rain date is Monday.

Westboro
Tomorrow: The traditional Fourth of July block party will be held in front of Town Hall at 34 West Main St. from 6 to 10 p.m. The Reminisants, an area band, will be on hand to play music from the 1950s throughout today. Food vendors and games for children will be available.

West Brookfield
Sunday: The annual Independence Day Celebration will be held at 5 p.m. on the Common on Route 9. There will be face painting, Hula-Hoopers and family fun, followed by a concert with Charlie Lask with the All Star Band at 6:30 p.m. and the annual bonfire. The rain date is Monday.

Westminster
Monday: The Westminster Historical Society will hold a public reading of the Declaration of Independence at noon on the Common on Academy Hill.

Woodstock
Monday: The annual Fourth of July Jamboree will begin at 11 a.m. at the East Woodstock Common at Woodstock Road and Prospect Street. There will be a parade and festivities.

Worcester
Tomorrow: Cristoforo Colombo Park on Shrewsbury Street will open at 6 p.m., with snacks and treats for children. A flag-raising ceremony will be at 7 p.m. and a concert of patriotic music will be presented at 8 p.m. by the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra. The fireworks display will be at 9:30 p.m. The rain date is Saturday.
