Families are drawn to Camp Common Ground in Vermont, a family camp started in 1994, for a whole host of reasons: it's an affordable, all-inclusive family vacation, the food is delicious, the facility is ecologically built and beautiful, and there are creative, fun activities for kids, adults, and the whole family to do. This summer, Camp Common Ground has also attracted musician Jim Scott and pop artist Michael Albert who will be teaching adult programs while spending time with their own families.
During Camp Common Ground, kids go off to "Kidville" in the morning for a dynamic, free choice children's program that offers activities like outdoor exploration, games, water play, and art & crafts. While kids are occupied, parents can partake in activities and classes too that range from hiking to watercolors to music to improv to writing (that's the tip of the iceberg!).
"When I arrive at Camp and see the lineup of great teachers and classes offered during my week, I feel like a kid in a candy store!" reported Jane McGurty, a long time camper. "I love that I can go on vacation and truly feel inspired by the instructors and my fellow campers. It's unlike any other vacation I've been on."
Almost all instructors at Camp Common Ground are experts in their fields who choose to take a week out of their regular lives to join campers in this beautiful, natural setting. Many of these staffers bring their own families with them to Camp. Their kids run around in Kidville and their spouses can experience the adults programs. And as a family they can enjoy all of the other great things about family camp - seeing the stars, having fun in the pond, and meeting new friends and other families.
Camp Common Ground campers are used to instructors of a certain caliber that bring their expertise to adult programming. For example, regular staffers include Martha Siegel, a strings teacher who works at the United Nations International School in New York City, Jackie Mangione, an accomplished watercolor and oil painter from Vermont, Marc Kornbluh, an award winning glass artist out of Nebraska, and Sam and Alice Silverman, non-violent communication therapists that teach workshops together.
This summer, however, the lure of family camp has brought in two more high profile instructors: artist Michael Albert and musician Jim Scott. Both of these men spend a good part of each year on the road sharing their crafts. A trip up to Camp Common Ground, however, means they get to spend quality time with their families while sharing their passions with eager campers.
Michael Albert (www.cerealism.com), American pop artist from New York City, will be joining families at Camp Common Ground for the week of July 30, 2011. Albert's art, which he's been creating since his college days at New York University, has evolved in many quirky ways from doodles to serious wax oil drawing to the mosaic cereal box collages he has become known for. He's also the author of "An Artist's America," and started his own brand of juices under the name "Sir Real." Albert will be sharing his creative approach to art with campers.
Jim Scott (www.jimscottmusic.com) will be teaching at Camp Common Ground the week of August 6, 2011. Scott is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter whose music furthers the ideals of ecology, justice, and peace. His experiences include playing in Carnegie Hall and at the Newport Jazz Festival with the Paul Winter Consort as well as concerts with Pete Seeger and Peter Yarrow. Campers will get an intimate look into songwriting from an inspirational musician.
Family camp is quickly becoming a popular vacation choice for many families. Camp Common Ground, however, stands out from the crowd with its rich activity offerings for adults. Instead of choosing between swimming, hiking, and arts & crafts, adults at Camp Common Ground are choosing between all of the above with the added bonus of songwriting with Jim Scott, collage creations with Michael Albert, and many more vibrant programs that offer a unique change from everyday life. Camp Common Ground is more than just a vacation; it's an experience.
Camp Common Ground is running in one-week sessions from July 23 - August 19, 2011. To register or for more information call 1-800-430-2667 or visit www.cgcvt.org
