Liverpool and Sunderland have confirmed they have agreed a deal for Jordan Henderson to move to Anfield. The midfielder will undergo a medical on Merseyside today ahead of a £20m transfer that involves David Ngog heading to the Stadium of Light as a makeweight.
Henderson will become Kenny Dalglish's first signing of the summer, with no problems anticipated over his medical – the 20-year-old is due to join Stuart Pearce's England squad ahead of the European Under-21s Championship today – or personal terms.
Ngog, who barely featured for Liverpool once Dalglish replaced Roy Hodgson as manager in January, could be valued at up to £7m in the exchange, providing he passes a medical and agrees terms on Wearside.
A Liverpool statement this morning read: "Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson. The 20-year-old will today discuss personal terms and undergo a medical on Merseyside after a fee was agreed between the two clubs."
Sunderland were reluctant to sell their homegrown talent, who has won one full England cap, against France in November, but accepted Liverpool's £20m package was impossible to reject for a player who was also keen on the move. Manchester United had been linked with Henderson earlier in the season but were not in the market at £20m.
"A fee has been agreed with Liverpool for Jordan Henderson and he travels to Anfield today with the club's blessing," read a statement from Sunderland.
