A man breaking and entering into a Route 70 pizzeria early Sunday realized he tripped an alarm and quickly fled, according to surveillance video provided by Toms River Police.
Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy said a stocky, white male with a clean-shaven head was caught on video cameras installed at Geno D's Pizza, 189 Route 70 near Whitesville Road in Toms River.
Just after 3 a.m. Sunday, an alarm was tripped at the pizzeria, with officers and the owner responding shortly thereafter, Mastronardy said. They believed the business was victim of an attempted robbery, but after reviewing the security video, the culprit could be seen inside the pizzeria rooting around the business for about a minute before noticing a flashing red alarm and fleeing.
"Later Sunday morning after reviewing security video it was determined a white male subject actually pried open the rear door and entered the establishment and fled in a small white vehicle after realizing he activated the alarm system," Mastronardy said.
The suspect spends about a minute and 15 seconds attempting to open the back door with a crow bar and once inside is seen looking around the business, according to the police video.
Police believe the suspect also broke into three nearby businesses. The New Look By Lena Hair Studio was broken into, causing $150 in damage. Above All Hair was broken into and $75 was removed from a register, Mastronardy said. The incidents occurred around 3:15 a.m. Sunday, he said.
