Happy Father’s Day to all of the fantastic fathers! I hope you’re able to spend this special day with the ones you love the most.
I plan to spend Father’s Day with my wonderful dad, Van VanDeWalker. He’s the greatest dad a dog could ever want. He and my mom, Tracie, literally saved my life when I was a tiny baby abandoned on the coldest night in 2009.
There are so many neat things about my dad that shows how much he cares about animals. He takes me to schools, day cares and a zillion community events so we can get the message out about being kind to animals.
He’s a surrogate dad to all my Pound Pals at Macon Animal Control, where he works really hard to provide comfort to all the animals who find themselves at 1010 11th St. He watches after my Pound Pals who may be really frightened or maybe not feel well. He takes a lot of time to console those who need reassurance.
He always goes the extra mile for any animal and will go to great lengths for an alligator. My dad is crazy about alligators.
I’ve given so much thought to what to give my dad for Father’s Day. And I think I know the perfect gifts he wants more than anything in this world.
The ideal gift for my dad would be for fewer animals to ever cross the threshold of any animal shelter, especially in Macon. Never having to look in the eyes of a bewildered family pet as his parents turn him in to the pound and he watches his family walk away would be a dream gift for my dad.
My dad would be delighted with the gift of humane education for people of all ages in our community so folks could learn how to care for their animals and how to treat them in a kind, gentle manner. He would really appreciate it if the young people in our community grew up to respect all living beings, including animals.
But most of all, I think my dad would really love it if fewer puppies and kittens were ever born because he sees what happens when we have too many. That’s why he works promoting spaying and neutering every chance he gets. And that’s why you’ll find him working long hours with Central Georgia CARES at every Spay Day it sponsors.
If you think about it, these are really very simple gifts. Although they take a little effort, they’re not complicated and would bless not only my dad on Father’s Day but our entire community for years to come. Sometimes there’s real genius in simplicity. Happy Father’s Day.
