Eight of the countries have already confirmed their participation. Speaking to Showbiz Ralefala-Ndovie said in Gaborone yesterday that the pageant is meant to promote cultural values and awareness in the region. She said two girls from each country would be picked to compete in the pageant.
"Hosts for the pageant would also rotated annually until all countries are covered," she said. Ralefala-Ndovie said part of the proceeds from the competition would be used to build houses for the needy and homeless for the host nation.
"We will also extend our gesture by providing clothes, tents, and organising mobile clinics for countries that have been affected by natural disasters," she said. She said these duties would be undertaken by the reigning queen accompanied by the organisers. Ralefala-Ndovie revealed that the opening pageant would be held in Botswana this year and participants would be strictly Batswana before it rolls out to the rest of the SADC region.
"This is because this is a locally bred initiative and Batswana should be the first to enjoy it." She said the first person to wear the crown should also be a Motswana before it can be handed over to others in the region.
The auditions for this year's pageant would take place on June 25 and 26 at the Presidents Hotel in Gaborone.
Participants should be between 16 and 26-years old, but there is no specific criteria for build. "If you believe that you are beautiful, talented and have confidence then this is the pageant for you," she said. The auditioning fee is a non-refundable P500 and the pageant finals are to be held in November. Ralefala-Ndovie said the winner would receive P30, 000 cash prize and would be treated to a week in Cape Town among other perks.
She appealed to sponsors to support the show as it would give their companies mileage.
