World Netball Championships 2011

World Netball Championships 2011
The World Netball Championships 2011 was officially opened at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Sunday evening - an event which Singapore last hosted in 1983.

The ceremony started with Australia's team captain running into the arena with the trophy the Australians won four years ago. The official mascot was next to enter on a trishaw and then, the 16 competing teams - with hosts Singapore at the tail-end, receiving the loudest cheers.

The organisers also arranged a surprise birthday cake for Guest-of-Honour President S R Nathan, who celebrated his 87th birthday.

Singapore took on Bostwana in the opening game and the higher ranked Africans proved their mettle - winning 43-36 despite a determined fight from the Singapore girls.

Singapore next play South Africa on Tuesday.

The rest of the 14 teams will take to the courts at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Monday. Some of the matches to look out for: defending champions Australia taking on Samoa, and world number one New Zealand up against Fiji in their opening encounter.
