Coming October would witness mid size sedan called Sunny, produced by Nissan. This 10th generation model, originally launched in 1966, would come in with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, and its production would kick-start in mid August, its Chennai plant.
This new small car is likely to compete with Toyota Etios, VW Vento, Hyundai Verna, Swift Dzire, Ford Fiesta and Honda City. According to the officials, this mid size sedan would surely meet the increasing demand of 350-million strong middle class population and would prove to be an impetus for the economy.
Nissan which was determined to roll out its nine products in India by 2012, would now have to reconsider its plan, after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has defined ‘complete knock down units for India’, in which local production of automobiles would be encouraged. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers has objected to the new definition of completely knocked down (CKD), saying that unless the vehicles also use knocked down engines, the new regulations would witness duty hike up from 10 to 30% , which would make these cars too expensive.
Nissan officials agreed with the fact that the change in the duty structure has made them rethink their plans, but refused to tall specific dates for the launch of their new products.
