Mega Millions had a winner of $99 million in its Friday night drawing, but the multi-state Powerball lottery is continuing to rise for Saturday night, currently standing at $180 million, with a cash option value of $100.3 million.
Wednesday night’s drawing was the 10th consecutive one without a jackpot winner being selected.
According to Lottery Post, one ticket sold in Arkansas matched the first five numbers for a $200,000 second-place prize and was purchased with the Power Play option, which multiplied the prize to $1 million. Twelve other tickets won $200,000, none coming from New Jersey.
It costs an extra $1 to purchase a Powerball ticket with the Power Play option. In Power Play, non-jackpot prizes are multiplied anywhere from 2-5 times, depending on a computerized random number generated that evening. Second-place winning Power Play tickets matching five numbers but not the Powerball are always multiplied by 5 times, for a $1 million prize. Wednesday’s Power Play number was 2.
Back in April, Wyckoff Patch reported that a small business owner from Wyckoff won $1 million in a similar manner. He matched all five numbers, and barely missed the Powerball number, playing 34 instead of 37. The man, who said he hadn’t even remembered that he chose Power Play, saw his Match 5 winning prize multiplied by 5, earning him $1 million.
The ticket was sold at the Quik Mart at 85 Cresent Avenue in Wyckoff.
Meanwhile, players always need to be careful in checking their tickets, no matter where you are located. Over in New Zealand, Lottery Post reported that a four-week-old lottery ticket survived a spin through the washing machine to earn $250,000 for its owner.
The winner said he found the ticket last weekend after washing a pair of jeans. "I took it to the counter and the lady told me I had won $250,000," the winner said.
Saturday’s drawing will be the highest Powerball jackpot since June 1, 2011, when one ticket from New York won a $202 million prize.
