The Patriot Ledger, one of the best local newspapers in New England, has changed the format of its comics page, upsetting a segment of loyal readers.
Long time crossword fans were shocked to find the venerable NY Times crossword missing from the weekend edition on May 28. The puzzle, along with the NEA crossword for students, has long been a staple of the Ledger's lineup.

With its gradually increasing level of difficulty as the week progressed, the NY Times crossword provided a stiff challenge to readers of the weekend edition. The puzzle has been replaced by something called the Tribune Crossword, which is so absurdly simple a caveman could do it.

The downgrade of crossword action in the Ledger caught readers unaware, resulting in much angst among puzzle fans across Ledgerland, causing at least one subscriber to seriously reconsider his relationship with the paper. The Ledger has not responded with a comment at this time.

With apologies to cavemen everywhere and the folks at Tribune Crossword, it was a mistake. The venerable Times crossword, the NEA puzzle and our usual lineup of comics and other features will be back on Monday.
